About Us
Established in 1959, Savins is a family-run business in the heart of Limerick City. For more than six decades, the Savins name has been synonymous with music, technology and personal service, with our premises at 111 O'Connell Street remaining at the heart of the business for over 60 years.
Our story began long before the Savins name appeared above the door. The premises were originally occupied by Pigott & Co., a nationally recognised name in the music trade, which had been established there since 1911. In 1946, the Savin family, comprising the two Savin sisters and their father, purchased the business and renamed it Savins.
In 1959, Frank Tuohy purchased the business, beginning the Tuohy family's long association with Savins. While continuing to develop the music business, Frank also expanded the premises to include a furniture department. When Frank's son, Brian, took over the business, Savins entered a new chapter. The furniture side of the business was eventually discontinued, allowing the company to focus on its two core areas: music and technology. The musical instrument and sheet music departments continued to grow, while the technological side developed into what is now Savins AV & Lighting Systems, specialising in home automation, audio-visual systems, lighting and professional installations.
Music at the Heart of Savins
A major refurbishment in 2003 transformed the store into the modern retail space it is today.
Our ground-floor musical instrument department offers an extensive range of instruments, including digital pianos, keyboards, drum kits, acoustic and electric guitars, accordions, violins, banjos, bodhráns and wind instruments, together with a wide range of accessories.
We are proud to stock many of the world's leading musical brands, including Yamaha, Fender, Martin, Ibanez, Tanglewood, Takamine, Presonus and Pearl, alongside a selection of Irish-made traditional instruments from respected makers.
Our piano department occupies the mezzanine floor, where we showcase digital pianos from leading brands including Yamaha and Roland, with a range to suit beginners, students, experienced players and professional musicians.
Downstairs, our sheet music department is a destination in its own right. With an extensive collection covering everything from beginner and tutor books to exam material, repertoire and music for more advanced players, we are proud to have one of the largest collections of printed music in the Mid-West.
The Next Generation
Today, Savins remains proudly family-run, with the next generation of the Tuohy family now carrying the business forward.
Following in their father Brian's footsteps, his children Mark, Brian and Erin now lead the business, continuing the family tradition while bringing their own experience and expertise to Savins.
Erin oversees the musical side of the business, looking after our extensive range of musical instruments and sheet music and continuing Savins' long-standing relationship with musicians, teachers, students and music lovers.
Mark and Brian lead Savins AV & Lighting Systems, specialising in home automation, audio-visual systems, lighting and professional installations.
While Savins has evolved considerably over the generations, our core values remain the same: family, expertise, personal service and a genuine passion for what we do.
From our beginnings in the music trade over a century ago, to the business we are today, we are proud of our history - and even prouder to be building the next chapter of the Savins story.
